Landlord Love: John K. Freeman

Some landlords just collect the rents and (maybe) fix the faucets. Others change the world. A gold star goes to real estate developer John K. Freeman who transformed a seedy apartment complex into a thriving community with educational resources for struggling families.

Freeman is the hands-on owner of the Kinglsey Commons townhouse complex in Falls Church, Virginia.  Many of his tenants are immigrants who are new to the country and living on limited incomes. To ease the adjustment, Freeman provides:

  • a computer learning lab
  • a family resource center offering classes and homework help
  • four soccer teams, complete with uniforms
  • a summer camp
  • a 4-H club with its own garden
What's Freeman's motive? Some critics call him a megalomaniac who lords over the world he created. But if community resources help tenants learn skills and pay their rent, a heavy dose of altruism makes business sense.
